Butcher’s Broom, once used by butchers to clean their cutting boards, has a long tradition among
people of many cultures. In the Middle Ages, it was regarded as a highly valuable food, and the early Greeks recommended it
as a tonic. The plant was cited in the European medical literature of the 19th century. At this time, herbs began
to become an important subject of health research. A comeback of this plant has been observed since 1950, with publications
substantiating its benefits for circulatory disorders. The main ingredient in butcher’s broom are ruscogenins, due to their
anti-inflammatory and vasoconstrictive properties. These actives reduce the fragility and permeability of capillaries and
constrict the veins. The efficiency of butcher’s broom extract in treatments for vascular disorders and as anti-inflammatory
agent are described in human clinical trials. In cosmetics, butcher’s broom extract can be applied in face and body care preparations
to reduce swellings associated with cellulite and eye puffiness.
