Ginkgo biloba is the world’s oldest living tree, a species whose existence can be traced back more than 250 million years. It is the last survivor of an extinct family of trees, the ginkgoaceae, and is therefore regarded as a living fossil. Reasons for its survival are its adaptability and tolerance to environmental pollution. Ginkgo has a long history of medicinal use in traditional Chinese medicine. The first application for external treatment of skin and freckles was described in 1436 in China, during the Ming dynasty. Recent research has brought to light a range of active compounds in the leaves that stimulate blood circulation and have tonic effect on the brain, improving memory and providing an improved sense of well-being. Ginkgo can counteract aging as a result of its anti-oxidant properties, reducing reactive oxygen species, and had anti-inflammatory effect.
