Aescin is the main active ingredient of horse chestnut. Horse chestnut is native to Asia and Northern Greece but is now cultivated in many areas of Europe and North America. Traditionally, many of the aerial parts of the horse chestnut tree, including the seeds, the leaves, and the bark, were used in medicinal preparations. Modern extracts are usually made from the seeds, which have the highest content of the active constituent, aescin. The main areas of application are internal and external treatments for vascular disorders, such as heavy legs, swellings and oedema.

Horse chestnut seed extract increases the tissue microcirculation as well as the membrane elasticity and decreases the permeability of the vein walls. In addition,it has anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative properties. In cosmetics, aescin can be applied in face and body care preparations to reduce swellings associated with cellulite and eye puffiness.
